(1790-1868), an enthusiastic collector of materials for American history, from 1823 to 1830 published the National Journal, the first to be called an "official organ." From 1833 to 1867 he was occupied in preparing a documentary history of the Revolution. Nine volumes, entitled 11 American Archives," were published. The remainder still waits for publication. Colonel Force collected 22,000 books and 40,000 pamphlets relating to colonial history, probably the most valuable collection then in existence.
