an Italian historian, born at Portici, in 1871; wrote the brilliant works "The Greatness and Decline of Rome", and "Characters and Events of Roman History" (1901). This work, a departure in historical writing, consists of a series of studies of ancient Rome's great men and women, and of critical moments and events in Roman history. He, in 1909, delivered a course of lectures in the United States.
