A Polish historian of literature; born at Dzikov in Galicia, Nov. 7, 1837. Among his numerous monographs on the history of literature are: "History of the Pre-Christian World"; "The Polish Novel in the Beginning of the 19th Century"; "Decline of Polish Literature in the 18th Century"; "Shakespeare in Poland"; "Studies in the History of Polish Literature" (1886-92), - his greatest work, and a Polish classic.
