A supposed spongelike expansion of the tip of a rootlet for absorbing water; -- called also spongelet.
The soft succulent extremity of the fibrils or true roots of a plant, by which it absorbs or sucks up fluid. Similar spongioles have been supposed to exist at the terminations of the absorbents in animals.
