A French writer of history; born at Bretteville-sur-Ay, Dec. 29, 1833; died Dec. 14, 1892. He is author of "History of the Jacquerie" (1859; 2d ed. 1894); "Chronicle of the First Four Valois" (1862); "History of Bertrand Duguesclin and his Time" (1876). "Joan of Arc at Domremy" (1886); "France during the 100 Years' War" (1890). He edited Froissart's "Chronicle" (7 vols., 1869-77).
