A French romancer (1610-63). He first entered the field of literature with tragedies and tragi-comedies, but had little success. He then wrote a romance of chivalry, "Cleopatra" (12 vols., 1647-58), in which contemporary personages and manners are portrayed under names and amid surroundings of the age of Augustus. The episodes of intrigue and gallantry are to the last degree prolix and wearisome; but the characters are for the most part well defined, some of the scenes skillfully contrived, and the style always elegant and perspicuous. Among his other romances, in a like vein, are "Cassandra" (10 vols., 1642-50); "Pharamond" (7 vols., 1661-70); "Diversions of the Princess Alcidiana" (1661).
