A flat, triangular muscle, situate at the posterior part of the pelvis. By its base, it is attached to the anterior surface of the sacrum; to the corresponding surface of the great sacro-sciatie ligament and to the posterior part of the ilium. It terminates by a tendon, which is attached to the inner surface of the great trochanter. This muscle is a rotator of the thigh outwards, or of the pelvis in an opposite direction.
