born in 1819, was a captain during the Mexican War. In 1861 he was made colonel of Illinois volunteers, and placed in command at Cairo. He defeated the Confederates at Mount Zion, served under General Grant at Shiloh and was taken prisoner. He was made major-general, and defeated Generals Holmes and Price at Helena, Ark.
