A German writer on natural science; born at Frankfort on the Oder, Jan. 22, 1820; died at Halle, Aug. 6, 1876. His principal works are: "The Universe" (3 vols., 3d ed. 1859); "Wonders of the Starry World" (1861); "Popular Natural Science" (1865-67); "The Earth according to its Superficial Phenomena" (1873-76).
