An American miscellaneous writer; born in St Louis, Mo., Aug. 28, 1834. In 1883-84 she made a tour round the world. The first of her many publications was the "Simple Story of the Orient" (1869). "Legendary and Mythological Art" (1871); "Artists of the Nineteenth Century and their Works", with Laurence Hutton (1879); "Eleanor Maitland", a novel (1881); "Stories of Art and Artists" (1886); "Woman in the Fine Arts" (1904); and a translation of "Dosia's Daughter", a novel by Henri Greville, are included in her works.
