[Greek] A brownish body having nearly or quite the same constitution as haemoglobin, but differing in its absorption-spectrum; found in blood that has decomposed or has been treated with reducing and oxidizing agents. Its oxygen is less readily separable than that of haemoglobin. It occurs in the blood in life (Methaemoglobinaemia) after the use of phenacetin, antipyrine, and other drugs, and sometimes in the urine (Methaemoglobinuria).
