Born in 1812, represented Illinois in the U.S. Congress as a Democrat from 1843 to 1851 from 1859 to 1861. He organized a brigade in 1861, and commanded it at Belmont and Fort Donelson. He commanded a division at Shiloh, Vicksburg, Arkansas Post and on the Big Black River. He retired in 1864.
