An American novelist; born at Salem, Mass., April 9, 1827; died at Dorchester, Mass., Oct. 1, 1866. Her novel "The Lamplighter" (1853) had enormous success and was translated into foreign languages; it is still remembered for the idyllic charm and tenderness of its first few chapters, but the rest is commonplace. Her other books are "Mabel Vaughn" (1857); "El Fureidis" (1860); "Haunted Hearts" (1863).
