A Brazilian poet; born in Sao Paulo, 1831; died 1852. While studying law in 1848-51, he produced an abundance of romantic poetry in the vein of Byron, Heine, and Musset, which made him the most widely read poet of Brazil after Gonsalves Dias. His "Complete Works" (1863) contain also prose writings and three dramatic pieces.
