A French novelist; born at Havre, 1607; died at Paris, June 2, 1701. Her stories were greatly admired in their day; but they are now found monotonous and bombastic. This "new Sappho's" most celebrated work is "Artamenes; or, The Great Cyrus" (10 vols., 1649-58), in which the author's contemporaries figure under ancient names. She also wrote "Ibrahim" and "Clelie", romances. Besides novels she wrote "Conversations"; "Fables"; "Light Verses".
