(1757-1837), of North Carolina, Representative from 1791 to 1815, was Speaker of the House of Representatives from 1801 to 1807. From 1815 to 1828 he was a Senator from North Carolina. A Democratic-Republican of the strictest type, he was noted for his political uprightness and purity. He was a principal member of the faction called "Quids."
