are five in number, and issue from the vertebral column by the spinal foramina of the loins. The first lumbar nerve gives off three branches :-the external or ilio-scrotal; the middle or inguino-cutaneous, and the internal or infra-pubian. Along with the three pairs below it, it forms the lumbar plexus.
