A distinguished Scottish judge and philosophical writer; born at Monboddo, 1714; died at Edinburgh, May 26, 1799. He wrote: "Dissertation on Language" (6 vols., 1773-92), and "Ancient Metaphysics" (6 vols., 1779-99); both works upholding the theory that the human race was developed from simian stock.
