An English historian of art and miscellaneous writer; born in London, Oct. 20, 1825; died at Gamburg, Sept. 6, 1896. He was long eminent as a journalist, and for a time served in the British diplomatic service. His celebrity rests mainly upon the "History of Painting in Italy" (1864-71), the most important work on this subject, written in collaboration with G. B. Cavalcaselle. He also published other volumes on art subjects.
