An American editor, publisher, and litterateur; born in Boston, Jan. 17, 1719; died at Worcester, April 4, 1831. He established and printed the Massachusetts Spy, 1770-1801; imported and used the first font of music type; established the Massachusetts Magazine (1789-96); printed noted editions of the Bible and Watts's "Psalms and Hymns"; founded the Antiquarian Society, Worcester, Mass., and endowed it with a library and funds for its maintenance; and was the author and publisher of the "History of Printing".
