The theory advanced by Hering, which supposes that there are three fundamental color substances, each of which gives one color sensation when undergoing dissimilation and the opposite or complementary color sensation when undergoing assimilation. According to the sensations thus produced, these color substances are designated white-black, red-green, and yellow-blue.
