An Italian critic and poet (1719-89), who, after a roaming life in Italy, settled in London in 1751, whither he returned again about 1766, having left England in 1760 and founded in Venice the critical periodical Frusta Letteraria (Literary Scourge), which contained his most important work and is considered as epoch-making in Italian literature. Of his writings in English, the "Account of the Manners and Customs of Italy" (1768-69) attracted much attention. His "Dictionary of the English and Italian Languages" (1760, lately 1873) is still highly esteemed.
