born in Maine in 1833, was graduated at Bowdoin College in 1853, and was a lawyer in Chicago from 1856 to 1888. In 1862 he was a member of the Illinois Constitutional Convention. In 1888 he was appointed by President Cleveland Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.
