An American Greek scholar; born at Jackson, Me., April 28, 1819; died at Cambridge, Mass., March 21, 1884. Besides his valuable work as one of the editors of the American edition of Smith's "Bible Dictionary", the wrote "The Authorship of the Fourth Cospel" (1880), in which was announced the important discovery of Tatian's "Diatessaron", and which took high rank; compiled "Literature of the Doctrine of a Future Life" (1864), etc. He was one of the American committee of New Testament revisers.
