An American writer and educator, of celebrity; born at Billerica, Mass., May 16, 1804; died at Jamaica Plain, Mass., Jan. 3, 1894. She became a teacher in Boston in 1822; and was one of the first to introduce the kindergarten system in the United States. Besides contributions to periodicals she published: "First Steps to History" (1833); "Aesthetic Papers" (1849); "The Polish-American System of Chronology" (1852); "Chronological History of the United States" (1856); "Reminiscences of Dr. Channing" (1880); "Letters to Kindergarteners" (1886); and "The Last Evening with Allston, and Other Papers" (1887).
