(1805-1877), was in early life a Methodist preacher, and for many years edited the Knoxville Whig. He strongly opposed secession and became known as the " Fighting Parson." During the war he was a centre of the Unionist feeling in Eastern Tennessee, and was at one time imprisoned. He was Governor of the State in 1865-69, and U. S. Senator 1869-75.
