(1792-1873), of New York, was a Circuit Judge from 1823 to 1831. He was a Justice of the New York Supreme Court from 1831 to 1837 and its Chief Justice from 1837 to 1845. He was a Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court from 1845 to 1872. He was a member of the Joint High Commission, which in 1871 negotiated the Treaty of Washington.
