(1705-1782), succeeded William Shirley as commander-in-chief of the British forces in North America in 1756. He proved incapable and irresolute in the campaign against the French at Louisbourg. He laid an embargo on commerce in 1757, which was very unpopular. In 1757 he was succeeded by General Amherst.
