A Norwegian philologist, ethnologist, and sketch-writer; born in Sogndal, May 2, 1821. He has exhaustively investigated the language and literature of the Finns and Laps; a "Lap Grammar" (1856), "Lap Mythology" (1871), and like works, giving him pre-eminence in this field. "Holidays among Crags and Mountains" (1876) - hunting and fishing sketches, with the mountains of his country as a background-give another side of his literary power. Died Feb. 16, 1896.
