Syn.: oxyhematin. A dark brown amorphous substance obtained by treating a solution of hemoglobin with acetic acid. Found in the feces after hemorrhage of the intestinal tract. Compounded with the protein of the blood, it constitutes the oxyhemoglobin, and with chlorin, iodin, and bromin it forms hemin crystals. Upon oxidation it yields the imid of hematinic acid.
