Christmas Rose, Clove-tongue, (F.) Hellebore noir. The root of this European plant- Helleborus, (Ph. U. S.)-has a disagreeable odour, and bitter, acrid taste. It is possessed of cathartic properties, and has been recommended as an emmenagogue. It has been given in mania, melancholia, dropsy, suppressed menses, &o. Hose, gr. x to, as a cathartic.
