-
An orchidaceous plant (Peristeria elata) of Central America, so called from the resemblance of the column of the flower to a dove hovering with expanded wings, somewhat like the conventional dove seen in artistic representations of the Holy Ghost. The plant has laree, striated, green, pseudo-bulbs, bearing three to five lanceolate, strongly-ribbed, and plicate leaves. The upper part of the flower-stem is occupied by a spike of almost globose, very sweet-scented flowers of a creamy-white, dotted with lilac on the base of the lip.
