The active principle of Cincho'na lancifo'lia. An organic, crystalline alkali; of a white colour, and bitter, slightly astringent taste; very soluble in alcohol and ether, but almost in soluble in water. Sulphate of Cinchonia, which is formed directly from cinchonia, is soluble in water and alcohol. The action of the sulphate of tinchonia is similar to that of the sulphate of quinia; but it is less energetic, and consequently requires to be given in a larger dose.
