(1774-1848), English banker and diplomatist, became in 1810 the head of the banking house of Baring Brothers & Co., the financial agent of the United States during the War of 1812. In 1842 as special Minister to the United States he negotiated with Daniel Webster the "Ashburton Treaty," which settled the Northeastern boundary between the British provinces and the United States.
