An Italian poet; born in Milan, Dec. 19, 1827; studied law in Pavia and entered the government service, but resigned in 1873 owing to an optic infirmity, and has since lived in retirement near Milan. On the publication of a volume of "Verses" (1872), he was hailed by his countrymen as the peer of Manzoni and Leopardi, while Dall' Ongaro even styled him the greatest living poet of Italy. A second collection of his poems appeared as "New Verses" (1888).
