An American lawyer and historian, brother of John Shertzer; born in Pennsylvania, 1830. His home is in San Francisco. Besides valuable legal works, including "General Laws of California 1850-64" (1868), commonly known as "Hittell's Digest", he has published a critical review of "Goethe's Faust" (1872); the important "History of California" (4 vols., 1885-97); "Review of Goethe's Faust".
