A German historian and diplomat; born in Berlin, Nov. 6, 1802; died at Kunersdorf, Silesia, Feb. 12, 1887. His diplomatic career was important, and afforded him special facilities for compiling a "History of Russia and of European Politics during the Years 1814-31" (1863-77); "Frederick the Great as a Military Commander" (1881); and similar works, all of value.
