After Herkimer's defeat at Oriskany there was danger of St. Leger's descending upon Albany. All depended upon the relief of Fort Schuyler. Contrary to the advice of his officers, General Schuyler sent a relief party of 800 volunteers. The fort was relieved and St. Leger's troops dispersed (August 16, 1777).
