(1749-1815), a physician, was a member of the South Carolina Legislature from 1776 to 1783. He was taken prisoner at Charleston in 1780, and confined eleven months as a hostage. He represented South Carolina in the Continental Congress from 1782 to 1786. He wrote a "History of the American Revolution," "Life of George Washington," "History of South Carolina" and "History of the United States."
