Sea tangle, weed; a species found in northern seas, by some identified with L. Cloustoni. It is especially rich in iodin. The stems are used as bougies and tents for dilating the cervix uteri, strictures, sinuses, etc., because of their property of shrinking much in drying, and afterward swelling up to their original size when exposed to moisture.
