A German historian; born at Freiburg, Baden, July 18, 1775; died there, Nov. 26, 1840. His "Universal History" (1813-27), and its minor compendium, "Universal History of the World" (1830), exercised a great and beneficial influence upon the middle classes of Germany. Both books have been often reprinted and translated into several languages.
