A German historian of art; born at Gottingen, Dec. 25, 1832. He wrote: "Munich Antiques" (7 vols., 1861-69); "Masterpieces of Ecclesiastical Architecture" (1862), fruit of his studies in France and England; "Monuments of Art", in association with Lubke (6th ed. 1892); "History of German Copperplate and Wood Engraving. Died 1897.
