A Portuguese lyric poet; born at Sao Bartolomeu de Messines, in the province of Algarve, March 8, 1830. He is regarded by his countrymen as introducer of a new era of Portuguese poetry. National spirit, originality, sensibility, and rhythmic melody characterize his poems. They are published in "Field-flowers" (1870); "A Branch of Blooms" (1870); and other works. Died 1897.
