A German poet; born at Strasburg, Feb. 19, 1747; died at Frankfort on the Main, March 4, 1779. He wrote: "Prometheus and Deucalion" (1775), a farce ridiculing the critics who carped at Goethe's "Werther"; "Voltaire on the Eve of his Apotheosis", a dramatic satire (1778); "Repentance After the Act", a drama (1775); "The Child-Murderess", a tragedy (1779).
