A German romance-writer; born in Gelnhausen about 1625; died at Renchen, Baden, Aug. 16, 1676. In youth he was a military adventurer. According to some accounts he served the Bishop of Strasburg for a time, and became a Catholic. He became celebrated as the author of "The Adventures of Simplicius Simplicissimus", the life story of a vagabond adventurer of the Thirty Years' War, who settles into a peaceful old age in the Black Forest. His other romances- "The World Inside Out", "Joseph in Egypt", and "Pluto's Council Chamber", among them-are unimportant.
