A German Orientalist and traveler; born at Buda-Pesth, Oct. 14, 1840; died at Bonn, March 24, 1899. He was educated at King's College, London, and afterward was professor of modern Greek, Arabic, and Turkish in that Institution. In 1864 he became a member of the Punjab University College faculty, and took a lively interest in the cause of education in the Punjab. He is author of "The Races and Languages of Dardistan" (1867); "Theory and Practice of Education"; "Races of Turkey"; "History of Indigenous Education in the Punjab" (1883).
