(1820-1891), an eminent lawyer in Massachusetts at the time of the outbreak of the Civil War, entered the army as a major and, after a brilliant military service, became a brevet major-general. From 1873 to 1877, and again from 1881 to his death, he was a Judge of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts. From 1877 to 1881 he was Attorney-General in the Cabinet of President Hayes.
