A noted Italian-American archaeologist; born at Rivarola, near Turin, July 29, 1832. Appointed United States consul at Cyprus, he discovered a large number of antiquities there; the collection is now in the Metropolitan Museum, New York, of which he is a director. He has written: "Cyprus, its Ancient Cities, Tombs, and Temples" (1877); "The Metropolitan Museum of Art" (1882). Died Nov., 1904.
