A Portuguese poet (1800-75). Though almost blind, he studied jurisprudence at Coimbra. His first poetical composition, "Letters of Echo and Narcissus", published while he was a student, won him great celebrity. He excelled in pastorals; and to this class belong his "Spring", and "Love and Melancholy, or the Latest Heloise". He had a deep sympathy with nature, and was a master of elegiac verse.
