[Greek] A genus of plants of the Malvaceae. The root (Radix althtaeae, G. P., the A., U. S.) and the leaves (Folia althaeae, G. P.) of A. officinalis, or marshmallow, furnish a mucilage (Mucilago althaeae) and are a demulcent. Syrulpus althea, U. S. (Sirupus althaeae, G. P.), is used as a vehicle, especially for cough medicines. A. rosea, the hollyhock, has similar properties.
